California:  Northstar at Tahoe Ski Vacation

On the northern shores of Lake Tahoe, situated at a base elevation of 6,330 feet, is what some would consider the ultimate Lake Tahoe ski resort. With 92 trails, 3,000 acres of skiable terrain, 19 lifts including two gondolas, and 350 inches of snow annually, Northstar at Tahoe is a the perfect destination for a winter vacation.

Northstar is a user friendly resort in the sense that it caters to all experience levels. If you’re just beginning to discover the ridiculously amazing world of skiing or snowboarding, then the Northstar Ski & Snowboard School is for you. Group or private lessons are available at this world-class school for everyone from beginners to intermediate level skiers or riders. For the confident and capable, the Backside offers nine different one mile-long advanced runs and there are seven different terrain parks, including a 420-foot superpipe to channel your inner Shaun White. Northstar is also known to have some incredible tree skiing that will challenge your quick reflexes while sheltering you from any harsh conditions.

Off the mountains, Northstar offers activities suitable for both the skier and non skier. Check out the 200-yard tubing hill located mid mountain just above the gondola or strap in to the Apex Bungy trampoline for some exhilarating fun. Northstar is also home to the deluxe Cross-country, Telemark & Snowshoe Center. Here you’ll get geared up with snowshoes, track or skate skis and be on your way to explore the 25 miles of scenic trails around Northstar. Along the way, if you need a break or just want to stop to take it all in, do so at one of the many warming huts where you can grab yourself a cup of hot chocolate or tea.

You’ll feel more like you’re in the Swiss Alps than Northern California when you come to Northstar. In the Village at Northstar, the quaint streets and buildings modeled after Swiss chalets offer a variety of shops and restaurants to suit your every need. Warm up after a long day on the mountain around one of the many fire pits scattered around the massive ice skating rink located in the heart of the Village. S’more kits are available for purchase for the kids, and hot totties are by no means prohibited for the adults. A little après wine tasting never hurt anyone and can be enjoyed at Grapes & Grounds or Earthly Delights. If you’re feeling crafty and need a break from the hill, try your hand at some candle making at The Villager Candle Shop or make some fashionable new jewelry at Farrah Ralé Bead Design.

There are endless appealing aspects to Northstar, but perhaps one of its main draws is the fact that it’s so accessible. A three-hour drive from the Bay Area and 30 minutes from Reno make getting there a cinch.
